TRAVELING CROATIAN SEA COAST | SPLIT, MAKARSKA AND DUBROVNIK

We escaped to the blue skies of Croatia, a trip with no emails, just my husband and I. Starting from Split, then driving to Makarska Riviera and finishing the trip in beautiful Dubrovnik. It were days full of sunshine, turquoise waters, divine food and history…just what the doctor ordered!

Travis and I started our first day in Split by exploring nooks and crannies of this historical town. It was like traveling back in time. Buildings and ruins breathed the story of Split through time. With massive stones that fit together without the use of mortar, Roman architecture stood out the most. We loved spending chilled evenings sitting on warm ancient stones, and drinking local red wine whilst listening to live music.

However you’ll find here more than just a history. Croatia has a long and proud culinary tradition drawing upon its own natural resources, as well as influences from Italy and across the Mediterranean. For first lunch of our trip we visited Fife Split Restaurant. Both being “foodaholics” we were impressed with the quality of food, generous portions of fresh seafood, lots of meat options, local cheese and lets not forget Croatian wine. So simple, yet so delicious!

For the second leg of the trip we explored Makarska Riviera. It stretches for 60km between the towns of Brela and Gradac with the main town being, of course Makarska. The Riviera is one of the most gorgeous locations on the Croatian coast with beautiful beaches, pine trees, turquoise sparkling water and peaceful bays.

We decided that the best way to see the place was by boat so we booked all day tour which took us along the coast and also to Hvar and Brac islands. It was an amazing day, full of entertainment, music, dances, fresh caught fish, cooked right on the boat, and last but not least the nature itself.

Dubrovnik was the last stop of our voyage. With sublime location, overlooking the Adriatic, it is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. Now a Unesco world heritage site and Croatia’s most up-market destinations.

Last days flew fast but nevertheless awesome. We kept good vibes by kayaking, visiting island of Lokrum, where we swam in the Dead Sea lake and chased local rabbits. We also took a cable car up high to see Dubrovnik from above and I made sure to visit open-air markets for some region’s signature lavender soaps and scents. Oh, and Travis sat on the Game of Thrones Iron Throne. Dream come true! 🙂
