Tori and Scott’s August wedding at Gar Woods began with rain and ended with a packed dance floor. In between came two first looks, beach portraits, a perfectly timed speedboat, and a champagne spray that became one of my favorite photographs of their day.

For couples planning a Lake Tahoe wedding, weather is often one of the biggest photography questions. Will we still have outdoor portraits if it rains? What will the lake look like beneath cloudy skies?

Their celebration offers a beautiful example of how a day can unfold when the weather changes. The rain cleared just in time for their first look, leaving soft light and a quieter palette across the lake.

A Lake Tahoe Wedding with a Personal Connection

Lake Tahoe has been a second home to Tori throughout her life. It also holds a special place in Scott’s heart, making it a meaningful setting for their wedding.

The two met at work in Los Gatos. Later, Scott proposed during a walk with their black Labrador, Jovi, on a beach where they had shared one of their first dates. A surprise gathering with family and friends followed at Tori’s mom’s house.

That connection to the water and family carried into their wedding day. Before celebrating at Gar Woods, they spent part of the day at Tori’s parents’ property, with wedding party photographs on its private sandy beach.

Lake Tahoe Wedding Dress Inspiration: Tori’s Saint Bridal Gown

I have to give Tori’s dress a moment of its own. Her Saint Bridal gown from Lovely Bride was one of the most beautiful dresses I’ve photographed at a Lake Tahoe wedding. The structured, strapless bodice opened into a flowing skirt, with delicate pleating that added beautiful texture and movement. I loved how the fabric floated around her as she walked, then settled into a sweeping train.

For brides looking for Lake Tahoe wedding dress inspiration, Tori’s gown shows how beautifully a flowing skirt can work in this setting. It moved easily from portraits among the pines to the lakeshore and onto the dance floor. When trying on your own dress, take a few steps, turn, and see how the fabric moves with you. Those little movements can become some of the loveliest details in your wedding photographs.

First Looks and Beach Portraits Before the Ceremony

Tori shared a first look with her dad, making room for a separate family moment before the ceremony.

Her first look with Scott took place beside her parents’ house after the rain cleared. We then photographed the wedding party on the property’s private beach. The overcast sky softened the light, with forested hills and the lake stretching behind them.

Tori’s flowing Saint Bridal gown moved beautifully throughout the portraits. Its intricate details and airy skirt felt especially lovely beside the water. The bridesmaids’ muted green dresses complemented the landscape, while white and soft blush flowers added a delicate contrast.

For couples considering portraits away from their wedding venue, this is a useful timeline example. A family property can give the photographs personal meaning, provided you allow time for portraits and travel before the ceremony.

The private beach shown in these wedding party photographs belonged to the family property; it was separate from Gar Woods.

What If It Rains on Your Lake Tahoe Wedding Day?

For Tori and Scott, rain affected the first part of the day and stopped before their first look. We were able to photograph outdoors afterward, with cloud cover remaining over the lake.

I loved how those skies changed the colors. The water looked softer, the greens felt richer, and the distant mountains appeared more muted. Their photographs have a gentle, romantic atmosphere that reflects how Tahoe looked that afternoon.

Cloudy skies can provide beautiful portrait light. Active rain calls for a different plan, which is why I recommend discussing weather options before your wedding.

When building your photography timeline, consider:

  • A sheltered portrait option. Identify somewhere you would be happy to take photographs if it remains wet.
  • A little flexibility. Leaving some breathing room can help us use a suitable break in the weather.
  • Your priorities. Let your photographer know which outdoor photographs matter most to you.
  • A coordinated plan. Confirm ceremony and reception weather arrangements directly with your venue and planner.

Tori and Scott’s day shows what was possible after their rain cleared. Your own plan should account for the possibility that it continues.

A Gar Woods Ceremony with an Unexpected First-Kiss Backdrop

Their ceremony at Gar Woods brought everyone together beside Lake Tahoe. Low arrangements of white and blush flowers with greenery framed the setting, keeping the lake views open behind them.

Then, during their first kiss, a speedboat passed with an enormous spray of water behind it. The timing made the moment feel wonderfully grand.

We joked that Scott had ordered it.

It was one of those completely unplanned details that becomes part of a wedding’s story. Alongside the carefully chosen flowers and setting, there was this fleeting moment that nobody could have scheduled.

Champagne Wedding Photos on the Gar Woods Beach

One of the standout photographs came when Scott opened a bottle of champagne on the beach at Gar Woods.

Champagne sprayed everywhere, turning their bride and groom portraits into a full celebration. The image had movement, energy, and the lake as its backdrop—an epic photograph that felt completely at home in their gallery.

I love including room for this kind of playfulness. Your wedding portraits can hold both the quieter moments together and the excitement of being newly married.

If there is a photograph you are especially excited about, mention it while we plan your coverage. We can make time for it while leaving space for the unexpected moments, too.

A Lakeside Reception and a Dance Floor That Stayed Busy

Inside Gar Woods, white linens, flowers, and candles complemented the warm wooden interiors. Large windows connected the reception space to the lakeside setting outside.

Tori and Scott wanted beautiful, simple décor that made the most of Tahoe’s natural beauty. Their details carried that idea throughout the celebration, including lake-inspired stationery and personalized chocolate-bar favors.

Then the party took over.

DJ Sawyer and Sax Tahoe brought together a DJ set and live saxophone, and the guests matched their energy. The dance floor stayed busy, giving me so many expressive, joyful moments to photograph.

The evening photographs tell a different part of the story from the soft afternoon portraits: raised glasses, dancing, laughter, and a room full of people enjoying themselves.

After the wedding, Tori and Scott headed to Italy for their honeymoon, beginning in Venice. A wonderful next adventure after a Tahoe celebration full of personality.

Planning Your Gar Woods Wedding Photography

Tori and Scott’s wedding combined several settings: a first look beside the family home, wedding party portraits on a private beach, and the ceremony and reception at Gar Woods.

If you are planning something similar, I can help you build a photography timeline that accounts for those locations, travel, changing light, and time with your guests.

You can also explore an intimate Gar Woods wedding for another perspective on celebrating at this venue.
